The newest branch of the United States military, the U.S. Space Force, gave the internet a first look at its utility uniform on Friday. Joking ensued.
Now the real purpose of the tweet was to highlight the embroidered nametape that identifies the new military branch in blue stitching. But the nametape in question is affixed to a standard uniform of the sort already in use among other branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Yes, that color scheme is a flavor of what's commonly known as woodland camouflage. A follow-up tweet noted that the uniform is the same as the one used by the Army and Air Force. Not having to design something totally new is a cost-saving measure.

It quickly became clear in a scattered set of other follow-ups that United States Space Force Twitter is pretty humorless and could stand to lighten up a bit. This is Twitter! It's the place even the stuffiest people and organizations get to be a little loose.

Completely plausible reasoning on the Space Force's part aside, the use of recycled Army/Air Force uniforms prompted some truly excellent tweets. Really, just a whole lot of great laughs to be found here. Even if there are reasons to take this new branch of the military seriously, the jokes stand on their own.
There are also lots of killjoy tweets from conservative figures who seem very agitated over the idea of people having some fun with an obvious joke. I'm not sharing those tweets, though. They're mostly just "harrumph, actually that camo isn't for use in space."
The joke tweets are much better, and not just because they have 100 percent more Star Wars references.
